Aralık, 2013 Özlem KALYONCU ABSTRACT The effect of humic acid on growth and ion uptake of Mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) grown under salt stress. Salinity is one of the most important agricultural and environmental factors that drastically affects large areas; causing the reduction of crop productivity throughout the world. Humic acids affect the quality of soil and amount of yield in a distinct manner. Moreover, they increase the soil cation exchange capacity. Humic substances are responsible for pH adjustment and protection against stress factors such as salinity and drought in addition to harmful effect of toxic elements to the plants. In this study, effects of humic acid on the growth of Mung bean (Vigna radiata (L.) R. Wilczek) seedlings under different amounts of salt stress. For this purpose, the interactions of humic acid with NaCl concentrations of 50 mM and 100 mM were analyzed in a plant growth room with controlled conditions. In this research, the reduction of the leaf numbers, plant heights, fresh and dry weights of roots, stem and leaves is observed depending on the salt concentration applied. However, humic acid application reduced the effects of salt significantly. The examination of ion uptake mechanisms after salt application on experimental groups revealed that the amount of Na increased while K and Ca decreased. For the above ground parts of the plant; the concentrations of Na, Mg and Mn increased while K, Ca and Zn decreased. Furthermore, for the groups treated with humic acid it was observed that K, Mg, and Mn concentrations increased for the underground parts, while only K concentration increased for the above ground parts of the plants. Humic acid plays an important role to reduce the effects of moderate salinity on salt sensitive plant, Mung bean. The findings suggest that using humic acid on saline soil might be beneficial to increase the amount of crops. December, 2013 Özlem KALYONCU
