ABSTRACT Abû Zayd al-Balkhî was born at Samestian, a village near Belh in Horasan, about 850. He died upward of 80 years old in 934. Abû Zayd al-Balkhî, in his day noted scholar in both Islamıc and philosophical disciplines, but now known chiefly as a geographer. As a young man he left home and travelled on foot as far as Iraq with a company of pilgrim bound for Mecca. He spent eight years in Iraq, assiduously studying many different subjects. Of his teachers the only one mentioned is the well-known philosopher Abu Yusuf al-Kindî. Along with philosophy Abû Zayd al-Balkhî studied other Greek sciences such as medicine and physics. At this period, it was unusual for students of the philosophical or foreign disciplines to pay any attention to the Islamic disciplines, but al-Balkhî combined the two sets of studies and gained a high degree of mastery in both. Yâkût el-Hamevî gives the titles of 56 out of about 60 works of al-Balkhî in Mu‘cemu’l-udebâ, he adds 13 titles to the 43 listed in the Fihrist which written by bn Nadîm. But only two works can come to this days. These are Suwar al- Akâlîm (other name is Takwim al-Buldân) and Masâlih al-abdân wa’l-anfus. The Masâlih is al-Balkhi’s only contribution in the field of medicine. Masâlih has two part, first is about body health. In the second part of his book, Abû Zayd al-Balkhî discusses psychological health in detail. He mentions on psychological symptoms such as anger (gazab), distress (keder), fear (havf), terror (feze‘a), sadness (hüzn), sorrow (ceze‘a), anxiety (vesvese) and this symptoms’s cure methods. We presented Abû Zayd al-Balkhî’s cure methods and relation with moral philosophy of these cure methods in this work.
