Özet:

This research mainly aims at analysing the core of the ethnic conflicts in the Balkans by utilising the historical data and considering the violent disintegration of Former Yugoslavia as a case study in order to put forward some long-lasting solutions to 'the Balkans question'. The overall purpose of this thesis is to analyse the origins of the conflicts which broke out all over the Balkans in the last decade and then, to assess the proposals for getting peace and long-term stability in the region. In addition to the origins and evolution of the crisis in the region, this research also includes the assessment of the international dimension of the crisis such as the roles of the UN, NATO, the EU and the US in crisis management during the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo. The thesis further explains why the approaches of the European Powers and international organisations directed towards the region has changed substantially beginning from the midst of 1990s, and why they began to pay more attention to this problematic region of the continent. In this context, considering the main factors behind the ethnic and socio-economic problems of the Balkan states, long-term perspectives of Western Powers towards the whole region and some possible remedies for the solution are explained. As a result, this study assert that the best way for removing the factors contributing to the instability of the region is to ensure social and economic welfare to all of the Balkan nations without any discrimination based on ethnicity or religion. For this reason, simultaneous integration of the Southeast European states to the EU is being proposed as the most appropriate means for realizing this goal.
