Novel emerged as a new device for expressing oneself in the “modern times”, when the rational mind in the West, the bourgeois individualism, the idea of development and the holistic idea of history were considered as the basic values. In this work, the transformations in terms of theme and form that the novel has gone through under the conditions in which the severe criticism of these notions has prevailed. As far as the emergence process of novel in Turkey, which has experienced modernization much later than the West, is considered, it is seen that not only the Turkish intellectuals but also the way of relating novels written by them to statements of modernization and development has naturally developed into a much more different style than the West. The specific structure of the modernization process of Turkey and the mission which the Turkish intellectuals had to take on throughout the modernization process caused the Turkish novel to be molded in a culture of politics and be defined as a means in the direction of the statements of modernization and development. The effects of the statements of modernization, which have been abandoned both in the world and in Turkey as a result of the changes experienced since the 1980s, on the Turkish novel is the subject of this work. The developmental process of the Turkish novel has been examined through the late modernization of Turkey. The Turkish intellectual, who took the “savior intellectual” role in the modernization, was able to depict this role in the fictional world as well. The nature of reflection of the modernity criticism on the Turkish novel has been examined in terms of the changes in this “intellectual fiction”. Thus, the novel Kar, which is a “political novel” written in the late 1990s, has been analyzed for that purpose. The fact that Kar is a political novel has made it possible to compare the changes in Turkish novel which has been under the influence of the political paradigm since the 1980s. It can be concluded that as the statements of modernization and development has been abandoned, the depiction of the intellectual in Turkish novel who got defined through his mission of enlightening, playing the savior and changing has been abandoned, too.
