Bunun yanı sıra, MEB’in programlama kazanımlarının ve etkinliklerinin bilgi işlemsel düşünme becerisi bağlamında değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. -------------------- In our present age, in which technological progress is continuing at a fast pace, the education system is under the influence of this fast development. Programming Education, which has been talked about frequently in recent years in our country, is one of the changes in this context. When Programming Education is considered in general terms, it is seen that various tools are used at different age levels and in different education groups. The block-based programming tools like Scratch, Code.org, and unplugged programming activities, which address the developmental characteristics of children, and which are used in initial stages of Introduction to Programming at K12 level, are used in this context. The purpose of the present study is to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of plugged and unplugged activities used in algorithm teaching at k12 level in terms of computational thinking, algorithm success, motivation and learning strategies. In addition, also in the scope of the study, it is aimed to determine the findings on determining which tools to be more effective in algorithm teaching by revealing the effects of block-based programming tools Code.org and Scratch and unplugged activities on basic algorithm acquisitions (linear logic structure, condition and loop). Also, another purpose of the present study is to determine the levels of support of the learning outcomes of the MEB on computational thinking skills. The study was designed with pretest-posttest quasi-experimental model with Control Group design, and the Study Group consisted of 115 sixth grade students who studied at a secondary school in 2017-2018 Academic Year. Three branches were selected randomly at the school where there were 4 branches; and the Study and Control Groups were determined with the Random Assignment Technique. In the study, Study Group 1 received Code.org courses, Study Group 2 received unplugged courses, and Control Group received training with Scratch for 2 lessons per week for 6 weeks. The Computational Thinking Levels Scale, Motivation and Learning Strategies Scale, and Algorithm Achievement Test were used in the study in pre-test and post-tests as data collection tools. Seven hypotheses were tested in the scope of the study. According to the findings obtained from the present study, it was determined that the education, which was provided without group discrimination, showed a significant improvement in the computational thinking skill levels of the students; and this development was determined only in the group that received unplugged education. In addition, it was also determined that computational thinking ability did not differ among groups. There were no significant differences among the groups in terms of and gender and group; however, there was a difference in favor of male students in the unplugged education group. Similarly, the analyses that were made without group discrimination showed a difference in favor of male students. According to another finding that was obtained in the study, the education that was carried out without discriminating the group affected the development of the algorithm success positively. When this result was examined on the basis of group, it was determined that the education improved the algorithms success in 3 groups at a significant level. No significant differences were detected among the groups in terms of algorithm success. It was also determined that the common effect of group and gender did not cause any significant differences in terms of algorithm success; and that the gender factor did not differentiate the algorithm success both in terms of group and without considering the groups. According to another finding of the study, a significant increase was detected in the motivation level without any group discrimination, and that the same significant increase occurred in all three groups. The analysis made among the groups showed that there were no significant differences. No significant differences were detected in terms of the common effect of groups and gender on the motivation level; and when the gender factor was analyzed based on groups, it was found that there was a difference in favor of the male students in the group that was educated in an unplugged manner. In the scope of the present study, it was determined that there were significant differences among the groups in terms of learning strategies when the data on learning strategies were analyzed. When this situation was analyzed on a group basis, it was seen that the education supported the cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies. As a conclusion, it was shown that plugged and unplugged activities have similar effects in terms of algorithm success, computational thinking ability, motivation and learning strategies. This situation shows that unplugged activities may be as effective as plugged activities; and that it is possible to achieve the desired effects when appropriate designs are realized for the target audience at k12-level programming training, and each tool may be used easily by educators.
