Özet:

8000 yıllık tarihi geçmişe sahip olan, Doğu Roma ve Osmanlı gibi dünya imparatorluklarına başkentlik yapmış, doğu ile batının birleştiği bir coğrafyada aynı zamanda kültürleri ve medeniyetleri de buluşturan İstanbul, kent içi ulaşım tarihi ile de bize pek çok önemli deneyimler sunmaktadır. Bir liman kenti olarak gelişmeye başlayan İstanbul, daha sonraları dışarıdan gelen göçlerle pek çok devletten daha büyük bir nüfusa sahip olmuş ve yaşadığı sorunlarla, eşsiz güzelliklere sahip olan bu tarihi kent sahip olduğu nüfusun ağırlığını taşıyamaz hale gelmiştir. Ulaşım, İstanbul’da, işte tam da bu sıkıntıların yaşanmaya başladığı 19. yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren, kentin en önemli sorunlarından biri haline gelmeye başlamıştı. Sorunun çözümü için de, kent, güncel ifadesiyle ‘çağdaş’ bir çözüm olan raylı sistem ile bu yıllarda tanışmaya başlamıştır. Devletin içinde bulunduğu ekonomik sıkıntılardan dolayı o günkü yönetim, çözümü özel sektör eliyle uygulamış ve ‘Dersaadet Tramvay Şirketi (DTŞ)’’ne verdiği imtiyazlarla kentin ulaşım sorununu büyük ölçüde çözüme kavuşturmuştur. Due to the economic woes of the state in that day's management, solution implementation and private sector hands, ‘Dersaadet Tram Company (DTC)’ to what concessions the city's transportation problems have largely resolved.
