ABSTRACT EVOLUTIONARY ETHICS In this thesis that entitled Evolutionary Ethics, historical and theorical development of evolutionary ethics is examined on the basis of conceptual relationships between theory of evolution and moral philosophy. While establishing various processes of this development, the problem of whether there is a logical necessity connection between theory of evolution and evolutionary ethics is came into prominence as a fundamental discussion issue. Also arguing the opportunity of an evolutionary ethics means adopting a contrary philosophical manner to the classical theologies that embrace the universality of human essence and moral values as a principle. In this context, the issue is studied between the limits of biology, sociobiology and religious-philosophical theology. It is a necessity to put forward both the historical and theorical development of evolutionary ethics with a descriptive method due to being studied firstly in Turkey. In this study it is understood that the basic concept and principle of evolutionary ethics is selfishness of human nature and explanations of other moral attitudes depend on this concept. According to this dominant understanding of evolutionary ethics, even altruistic ethics depends on our selfishly inclinations. Excessive emphasizing this wild side of human nature obtained legitimacy to a mentality that gives priority to powerful against rightful and nourished some Western ideologies results of which harmed humankind. The Christian theologians which in the begining deprecated to biological evolutionary theory afterwards embraced this theory in the context of a science-religion reconciliation. But it seems that being accepted as a scientific theory did not make it necessity to accept a Christian evolutionary ethics. The most important exception is evolutionist theologian philosopher Theilhard de Chardin. The Metaphysicians of the Process Philosophy who ground the relationship of God and humankind on the evolutionary theory must be added to him. Keywords: The theory of evolution, evolutionary ethics, human nature, egoism, altruism, moral values, consciousness, will, freedom.
