ABSTRACT This study aims to examine whether the depression levels of mothers and their children who experienced the 1999 Marmara earthquake underwent changes depending on some variables considered in the study or not. These variables are considered to be the area where the subjects have been during the earthquake, the period during which the subjects resided in the area; the ages, genders, vocational and educational status of the subjects; whether the subject previously experienced an earthquake or not; the degree of damage suffered by the house; whether the house belonged to the subjects or not; whether the subjects remained buried under the rubble or not; whether they received psychological support or not; the subjects’ emotional relation with the lost ones; negative changes in the subjects’ economic status following the earthquake; the depression levels of the children on the basis of high depression levels observed in their mothers and the levels of depression in children on the basis of their perception of the earthquake’s influence on their mothers. The practice started in June 2000 and the subjects comprised of 80 mothers and 80 children aged 9-13 who survived the earthquake. 40 of the said mothers and children experienced the earthquake in Avcılar and took shelter in the Florya Metropolitan Municipality Guest House and the Avcılar IETT camp while the remaining 40 have been in Gölcük during the earthquake and took shelter in prefabricated housing erected in the region. The random samples for the study were selected from among easily accessible families in the region. During the study, the “Mother Information Form” and the “Children Information Form” were used to obtain information about the above-mentioned variables and their effects on the mothers and children. Furthermore, the Back Depression Inventory and the Children’s Depression Inventory were also used for the mothers and children, respectively, with the purpose of determining depression levels. The methods were practiced face to face with the mothers and children within the framework of ethical rules applicable for studies conducted in disaster areas. The SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) program was applied on findings obtained as a result of the study and the following general results were obtained: When the mean depression points for the mothers are considered, it becomes clear that their depression levels are high. Depression levels are inversely proportional with the educational level. In addition, mothers who previously experienced another earthquake as well as mothers who received psychological support after the earthquake also have higher depression levels. Furthermore, the depression levels of mothers who report significant negative changes in economic status are also higher. The examination of the mean depression points for children reveals that their depression levels are low. There is no significant difference between the depression levels of children of mothers with a higher level of depression and the depression levels of children of mothers with a lower level of depression. However, the depression levels of children who perceived that their mothers were “highly” influenced by the earthquake are significantly higher than children who perceived that their mothers were “slightly” influenced by the earthquake. Increasing age also causes depression levels to increase significantly. Furthermore, the depression levels of children who remained buried under the rubble were also found to be high. The depression levels of mothers and children do not differ on the basis of other variables.
