Özet:

This thesis attempts to find out if there are any effects and influences of American Foreign Policy on European Union and Turkey relations, specifically on the milestone events that took place. From the very beginning, the Europeans had the difficulty on deciding whether to consider Turkey as a natural `insider? or a significant `outsider?. That is why, a powerful third-party?s presence has felt over time to support and accelerate the progress of Turkey? accession to the EU membership. Taking the US as this third-party, this study analyzes when, where and how this influence power is used.While studying these relations and events within in the transatlantic framework, this study?s objective is to understand in relation to which historical, political and theoretical backgrounds do these influences occurred.In the first part of the study the behavours of the parties in the thesis are explained by the theories realism/neo-realism, idealism and rationalism. In the second part, the weak points of the EU foregn policy mechanisms and the global player capability of the Union is being analyzed. In the third part the US foreign policy is evaluated specifically on Europe and the historical, politicial, financial opportunities that give the US the power to influence and effect EU affairs are shown. In the final part, relations between US-EU, EU-Turkey and US-Turkey are briefly given and the influence examples of the US on EU-Turkey relations are chronologically listed.
