ABSTRACT PROFILE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PLASTIC PIPES HAVING LARGE DIAMETERS Polymeric materials are widely used for the drainage and sewage pipe systems where they offer clear advantages such as lower density, corrosion resistance and ease of processing. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is mostly used material for pipe production and these pipes are produced in corrugated form to provide more strength by using less amount of material. Profile geometry of the corrugated sections has not any certain standard and there are several studies about it. In this study, different type of corrugated profile pipes were compared in terms of the maximum deflection values by means of the finite element simulation and segmental arch, depressed tudor arch and straight-top tudor arch profile pipes showed best results. Also, covered corrugated profile pipes were investigated in terms of the local buckling and different types of strip geometries were analyzed numerically where geometries with semi-circle and equilateral triangle sections showed better buckling resistance. Buried condition of the pipes is also an important issue and buried pipe was modeled by using photoelasticity in the final part of this study. As a result of the experiment, maximum stress locations in the pipe model were close to crown and about away from springline in terms of the differences between principal stress values.
