ABSTRACT This study has three broad purposes. It aims to investigate secondary students' alternative ideas concerning atoms and molecules. It also aims to design teaching strategies so as to remedy the alternative ideas determined. Finally, the study aims to evaluate the teaching strategies in terms of its contributions to students' understanding. To this end, a pre-post test approach was used. Additionally, some of the students were being interviewed so as to get a more detailed prophile of students' understanding. Results of the pre-test showed that even though they received informal teaching students still had some alternative ideas on the structure, movement and mass of atoms/molecules. Therefore, special teaching strategies were designed to remedy the alternative ideas which differ substantially from the scientific ones. Since the study aims a long-term learning, post-test was given to students 6 months after the specially designed teaching strategies had been completed. Results of the post-test indicated that some of the teaching strategies developed were very successful in remedying misconceptions while others barely met the expectations. In the light of the research findings, it is possible to conclude that finding out what students think and designing teaching accordingly is crucially important in remedying misconceptions and promoting students' understanding. Research findings also highlighted the difficulty in remedying misconceptions especially when they are deep-rooted.
