Ruskin ve Morris'in ideallerinin tersine makinayı yücelten fütürist söylem, yaşamı şekillendirecek tasarımlar üretmektense makina estetiğini yücelten biricik sanat yapıtları üretmekle ilgilenmişlerdir. ABSTRACT In the beginning of 20th century, the industry has taken the place of hand made functional objects with cheap mass production, while the people who were commited to the responsibility of producing refined aesthetic objects were declared obsolete. In cultural production area, the share of ceramic remained limited and was pushed to sub culture line. While some of the ceramicists utilized industrial possibilities and took the way of further improvement like Thomas Wedgwood, some utopians like William Morris disclaimed industry and worked on raising crafts to high art line. Altough some painters like Gouguin were involved in ceramic production, they did not incline to change the marginal role given to ceramics. Pioneers of studio ceramics such as Martin Brothers and George Ohr were producing very successful works but they could not trigger a movement that spread to masses. Eventhough Walter Gropius has eliminated the hierarchy between crafts and arts in Bauhaus manifest, he also conceded the artists and craftsmen under the command of machines. Although romantic period of bauhaus ceramic studio which lasted until 1923 could build bridges between fine arts and crafts arts, the next term has served capitalizm by inclining to mechanical aesthetics. Russian revolution came out with a different perspective such as machines serving people, and mobilized a lot of artists for a new, forming community. Artists who adopted the principle of Contructivism, produced works of art that constituted an infrastructure for new designs which would create new life. Before these designs were implemented to life however, their delusions ended with the turn of the revolution to naturalist aesthetics. Futurists produced extremely effective ceramics although they walked together with fascism. This futurist expression, in opposition to the ideals of Ruskin and Morris, was interested in making uniquie pieces of art which glorify machine aesthetics instead of producing designs that shape life. Those men that supported war, dissapered along with its destructive effect. Bernard Leach who had both modernist and anti-modernist tendencies made one of the most down to earth suggestions in art of ceramics. The connection between England and Japan which was made by Leach and Hamada, carries the same symptoms with Japanese woodprints at modernism's roots that influenced western aesthetics. Moreover, Leach's ceramics are related to the universal style with his commitment to "truth to materials". Form generally follows function at these ceramics. Leach and Hamada's ceramics compose their own standarts while taking their power from traditions which belong to their roots. These standarts separate the artist from the reality of the time they live in and drag them to an anti-modernist manner. Leach is a symbol of an intimate resistance to capitalism with his organanic, romantic, and spritual life style. Sodeisha movement and artists like Noguchi made use of traditions in order to get free from standards. These artists chose the way of modernizing the traditional forms in the search of the pure manner of earth. Cobra group and the painters like Miro and Picasso contributed so much to ceramics with their playfull and experimental work by wearing down the walls of high art. These artists developed reaction to capitalism's enforcement of rationalist reality by pretty much following surrealist technics. While ceramics is in an attempt to break the walls of high art by pushing the functional roots away to a symbolic position with artists like Hans Coper, a name like Peter Voulkos inside ceramics has started to strech the high and low culture relation which had already began to melt. Altough Voulkos contributed a lot for ceramics, his best known works are recognized not as ceramics but as sculpture. The final blow to high art discourse came from the Pop and Funk ceramics. These artists see clay as a tool for expressing their ideas by ignoring the truth to materials. Modern art movements' effort of shaping life resulted in an unbelievable diversity of experimentalism. Art of ceramics, set free from the shackles of dogmatical traditions as a result of this experimentalism, has got an ever-expending new structure. This new structure has given artists an infinite freedom of movement at both functional and aesthetic based areas.
