Temmuz, 2005 Mahit GÜNEŞ In this study, an autonomous mobile robot is developed to implement speed and position controls on a variable trajectory using general fuzzy algorithms. The speed of the mobile robot is controlled by fuzzy controller utilizing of modern image processing algorithms and the position of mobile robot is controlled by a microcontroller-based fuzzy algorithm. Autonomous mobile robot called (MBR-01) is completely developed in the conditions of our university workshops and laboratories. MBR-01 can communicate with the PC using a wireless communication system (RF with a 433 MHz ISM band) and can transmit the road image data knowledge to the PC by 2.4GHz wireless video-link transmitter. After the road image data is taken by a CCD camera to generate a proper reference value using a fuzzy edge detection algorithm and the speed data is obtained from inductive proximity sensor, which is converted to the rpm, then the difference (the error) is applied to the fuzzy controller to generate a control signal, which is sent back to the mobile robot. The trajectory deviation and the position data are detected by the mobile robot equipped with a designed optical sensor circuit. After comparing the reference position and the steering angle data obtained from a potentiometer connected to the steering mechanism of the mobile robot, the difference is applied to the developed microcontroller-based fuzzy algorithm for proper positioning the steering wheel driven by a DC motor. The cruise control of the mobile robot can be implemented by manually by using arrow keys on keyboard or automatically using the PC. In the study, it is thought that the trajectory control must be quickly implemented apart from the speed control using a microcontroller on the mobile robot side so that the mobile robot can not deviate from its trajectory position. The MBR-01 is equipped with a mechanical gear differential system transferring the rotating action from a driven DC motor to the wheel axis and a mechanical steering system changing the robot's position angle using a second driven DC motor. In order to communicate between computer and the mobile robot, it is used a video graphic device connected with an image receiver located in the PC slot. An infrared (IR) modulator is designed for transmitting the reference speed data from LPT1 to the mobile robot. Furthermore, it is designed and manufactured an electronic circuit board transmitting the speed data and trajectory deviation data from the microcontroller on mobile robot side to the PC through the wireless communication. The mobile robot system is manually or automatically controlled by the developed PC-based software. When selecting automatic control, the road image data taken from the mobile robot is transmitted to the PC monitor through the video graphic device. The image data on the monitor is copied into an image object for being processed as a pixel. Then, the fuzzy edge detection algorithm is applied on this image. After the processing edge detection, the line detection algorithm has been applied to reveal the line knowledge. After revealing the line knowledge, line slope of trajectory to be tracked is calculated. According to line slope, reference speed of mobile robot is calculated and the speed data is send to RF modulator connected to the PC's parallel port. The microcontroller receives the speed data from parallel port then converts it to serial infra red (IR) transmission protocol format. The data carried by RF signal (modulation) is transmitted to the mobile robot. The speed control data received by the microcontroller on the mobile robot side is converted into a parallel data format. Then, the microcontroller sends these control data to the DC motor's driver through the PWM technique. The line sensing unit uses 7 optical sensors for the position control. When the mobile robot is on the trajectory, the microcontroller receives the position data from only one optical sensor and save the data into the working register. This position data is processed in the microcontroller implementing the fuzzy controller and the processed data is sent to the PC to observe trajectory deviation. All control implementations of the MBR-01 can be made by a Pentium IV PC with 512 MB RAM which uses Window XP operating system. In this study all algorithms processing on PC are developed using C++, assembler codes, and Windows API components. Mobile robot system totally uses three microcontrollers on the PC side and five microcontrollers on the mobile robot side. Tracking the trajectory from PC monitor, it is manually possible to direct the mobile robot to any target without seeing it. Also, the mobile robot can transport approximately 5 kg weight on the defined trajectory from one point to other in industrial applications. In order to test of the mobile robot's speed and position controllers, it is implemented various experimental study on having to straight, intermittently, random slope, circular and different colors trajectories. Although it is focused on speed and position control of the mobile robot using various algorithms, it is also aimed to develop an educational environment by designing a simulator- based development software, which teaches fuzzy edge detection, line detection, and fuzzy controller design.
