Özet:Anahtar Kelimeler: Bitki evreni, lotus, gösterge, öteki, temsiliyet, alegori, ezoterik Tüm canlılar için ‘sonsuz yaşamın kendisi’ olan bitki evreni, uygarlık tarihi boyunca estetik ve yaşamsal değerinin yanında, tinsel ve ruhani özellikler atfedilip, geçmişten günümüze var kılınmaktadır. Bitki evreninden bir gösterge olan lotus bitkisi de, tarihsel süreçte din, felsefe, mitoloji gibi birçok alanda yer alarak mitler yolu ile günümüz sanatına aktarılmaktadır. Lotusun doğada biyolojik bakımdan karşılığına bakıldığında, kendisini sürekli olarak temiz kılan, çamurlu dip sularda köklenen, ışıkla olgunlaşan ve sonunda başını sudan çıkartarak hava ile bütünleşen bir gelişim süreci göstermektedir. Biyolojik özelliğinden dolayı lotus, bir çiçeğe ve meyveye aynı zamanda diliminde sahiptir. Bu gelişim basamağı, eski uygarlıklardan itibaren, bitkiye birçok anlam yüklenmesine kaynak olmaktadır. Çin felsefesinde lotus, geçmişin, şimdinin ve geleceğin bir aradalılığını ifadelerken, Hint felsefesinde ise çoğunlukla doğurganlığı imlemektedir. Özellikle Doğu medeniyetlerinde sıklıkla görülen lotus bitkisi, Batı’nın Doğu’yu keşif etmeye başlaması ile sahip olduğu gizemini de yaymaya başlamaktadır. Bitki; imge ve formunun alıntılanması ile karşı karşıya kalarak kimi zaman öteki olanın temsili olarak kültür endüstrisine katılmakta kimi zaman ise Doğulu bir sanatçının dilinde kültürünün en tipik göstergesi olarak var kılınmaktadır. Bu bakımdan tez, günümüz sanat eğilimlerinde lotusun, simgelediği değerler ve zamanla sadece imgelenen olmaktan çıkıp, sanatta sembol değeri taşımasının, geçmiş uygarlıklara hangi bağlamlarla yaklaştığına odaklanmaktadır. During civilised times, as well as aesthetics plants symbolise the spiritual. This is why it has been present from ancient times to today. The lotus is one index from the plant universe from areas such as historical times, religion, philosophy and mythology and hence has been transferred into modern art today. When we look at the lotus today in biology, the plant is rooted in mud but it matures in the light, and when the petals emerge from the water they face the fresh air, making the plant special in mythology. Due to biological factors of the lotus flower belongs to the same time period as fruits. The lotus has become a source of many meanings since the earliest civilisations. For example in Chinese philosophy the lotus indicates the past, present and future all together. In Indian philosophy it symbolises the beginning of new life. The lotus is seen very often, especially in Eastern mythology. Since the West discovered the East, the lotus started to lose its mystery. Its form and image has been taken and it has become like any other plant, or industrial product. In this thesis and today’s art, the lotus is a symbol of purity of the body and spirit. Today the lotus has become a theme in postmodern art. Therefore this thesis was focused on how the lotus symbolised in today’s art and it represents symbol in art rather than being a simulacrum.
