SUMMARY An authentic culture and a peculiar social structure have developed in Japan and they have rarely been affected by other civilizations until the last century, because this country is placed on an island. The architectural structures and the design basics have taken their shapes from the great respect, shown to the nature and the natural. The Japanese houses are built with the materials that are resistant to the earthquakes and the humidity, within the principals of a unique system which allows the household to change the shape, the size and the function of the interior space. The reason of developing this system is probably the shortage of land and estate in proportion of the Japanese population. The furnitures are limited in number, because they are frequently moved from one place to another and the Japanese generally sit on the floor. Genuine aesthetic components have arised from the religious beliefs and they have brought plain forms into the interior spaces and the furnitures. Japanese furniture examples have influenced the modern European furnitures with their materials, their forms, their proportions and their aesthetic features. In this society, which has always kept its personality, the cultural environment has taught the designers to maintain the cultural continuity. The Japanese furniture designers use the traditional components in the forms, the functions, the materials or in the basis of their designs. By taking support from their fine and pure traditional crafts, the Japanese designers took first place in the miracle which turned Japan into an industrial super state.
