Sustainable Textiles: Production, Processing, Manufacturing and Chemistry, Springer International Publishing Ag, ss.5-39, 2026
The concept of environmental sustainability on a global scale is increasingly driving the fashion industry toward eco-friendly production and consumption models. Beyond garment manufacturing, it has become essential to evaluate not only fabrics but also materials and accessories in alignment with sustainability principles. Functional components such as buttons, zippers, snaps, labels, interlinings, linings, and packaging materials must therefore be designed to minimize environmental impact within the framework of a circular economy. Eco-design-based accessory production not only reduces environmental effects but also ensures that products meet sustainability criteria in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. Accessories developed through innovative design approaches promote product longevity and encourage sustainable consumption practices such as repairability. Material selection constitutes a fundamental determinant in reducing ecological impact during sustainable accessory production. The preference for recyclable and biodegradable alternatives over conventional plastic- or metal-based accessories contributes to the conservation of natural resources. Beyond the adoption of biodegradable materials, the integration of recycling processes into accessory production represents a crucial aspect of sustainability efforts. Reintegration of accessory materials into the manufacturing cycle reduces raw material demand and lowers production-related carbon emissions. In addition to recyclable and biodegradable materials, strategies such as detachable accessory designs, the advancement of sustainable manufacturing methods, and the systematic application of eco-design principles are vital for minimizing the environmental footprint of the fashion industry. Sustainable accessory solutions developed in accordance with circular economy principles not only generate ecological benefits but also enhance consumer awareness, thereby reinforcing the sustainable fashion movement. Furthermore, consumer education and the adoption of transparent production processes by brands will facilitate the long-term implementation of sustainability policies, enabling the industry to more effectively fulfill its environmental responsibilities.
