MQI (mathematical quality of instruction), bu ortak çerçeveyi

A
Turkish Adaptation of a Framework for Evaluating the Quality of Mathematics
Teaching
Purpose
When people were asked
to evaluate a teaching they observed, it was seen that they approached the same
teaching from many different perspectives. One participant stated that the
teacher involved the class well in the discussion, while another participant
stated that the teacher never allowed students to think individually. While
another participant could see the scope of the key mathematical applications in
the lesson, another participant felt that teaching harmed the students because
the teacher did not laugh enough. All these examples are proof that even if the
same thing is examined, very different results can be achieved. Although this
is well received in terms of diversity, it also brings about confusion (Hill,
Sleep, Lewis and Ball, 2007; Hill et al., 2008; LMT, 2011; MQI, 2016).
In the light of all
this said; There are many different perspectives on how quality mathematics
teaching should be, but it seems to be beneficial to use a common framework to
eliminate the confusion mentioned above. MQI (mathematical quality of
instruction) provides this common framework. MQI; is a standardized tool for
assessing the mathematical quality of a teaching. MQI is a multidimensional
approach that focuses on teaching mathematics and mathematics rather than
general pedagogy and requirements. Using MQI, it is possible to characterize a
teaching simultaneously as strong in some respects and weak in some aspects
with a multidimensional evaluation. This provides a more detailed picture of
teaching mathematics (Hill, Sleep, Lewis and Ball, 2007; Hill et al., 2008;
LMT, 2011; MQI, 2016).
On the other hand there
is a need about evaluation of quality/efficiacy
of mathematics teaching in Turkey. So, the aim of this study is to provide
information about the adaptation of MQI to Turkish in order to meet this need
and to share ideas about the non-working / missing aspects of MQI.
Method
First of all,
the MQI scale was translated into Turkish by the researcher. After the feedback
of an MQI expert and language expert, the scale was finalized.
Discussion and Conclusion
In the
interviews with teacher educatorsrs after the adaptation of the scale, it was
concluded that an evaluation with MQI would be quite comprehensive and
multidimensional, as stated in the literature, so that a more reliable result
would be obtained about the mathematics teaching. In addition, this study is
thought to be important in terms of giving an idea to mathematics educators and
teachers about the criteria that a mathematics teaching should have in order to
be qualified as a quality.
