Özet

The aim of this study is to analyze the work Ayyar Hamza (1871) by Âli Bey-a prolific Ottoman playwright, translator, writer-with a focus on its source texts and its presentation / reception in the Turkish cultural and literary system. The motivation for the analysis is that Ayyar Hamza has two separate source texts: Molière's play Les Fourberies de Scapin (The Impostures of Scapin) (1671) and its Turkish translation by Ahmet Vefik Pasha under the title Dekbazlik (1863).It is observed that Ayyar Hamza, which is based on both the French original text and the mentioned Turkish translation, is usually regarded as an "adaptation" and presented / received as an "original" in the target system. Ayyar Hamza's relationship with Les Fourberies de Scapin and Dekbazlik brings to mind the concept of "compilative inter- and intralingual retranslation" (Alvstad, Assis Rosa, 2015) in the translation studies literature. In this regard, the study emphasizes that Ayyar Hamza can be taken as an "original" through "compilative inter- and intralingual retranslation", considering the text production traditions of the historical period in which it was presented to the target system.
