Homogeneous charge compression
ignition (HCCI) is a combustion concept with significant potential due to low
NOX, soot emissions, and high efficiency. However, the PPCI strategy
has potential because the HCCI engine operates in a limited load range and is
difficult to control due to lack of spark ignition or fuel injection. Early
direct injection during the compression process is an option within the PPCI
concept. However, in this strategy, the spray angle should be applied narrower
to prevent the fuel from impinging the cylinder wall. In this study, it was
aimed to constitute a PCCI concept with a pre-, main- and post-injection
strategy and injector with an 80-degree narrow spray angle. Two different
injection strategies were proposed in order to minimize emission. These were
compared with the conventional injection strategy under the same conditions.
The partial premixed (PPCI) combustion process was investigated in terms of
combustion efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions. The engine emits
significantly low NOX emissions with the PPCI combustion strategy.
