The Significance of European Music in the Education
and Training of Baglama in Institutions for Music Pedagogy
Abstract
After
the republic was established,
considering the conditions of that period, it was inevitable that the training
of music teachers was to be based on
the tenets of western (European)
music. Compiling the folk songs and arranging them polyphonically with
the techniques of western music was
perceived as a tenet and modernity and
became the convention. However, local instruments (folk instruments) have
been excluded from this ongoing process which appeared in that period.
It
took approximately 15-20 years for
local instruments to find a place in
educational programs for music pedagogy.
Yet, both teaching methods and performances on local instruments, which have been employed in the educational
process, haven’t gone been
applied beyond the bounds of
traditional music.
It
is, however, possible for baglama,
one traditional instrument, to be integrated into western music by:
1.
Creating authentic works from western musical patterns,
2.
Creating works in the tonal
structure of Western music,
3.
Transcribing composed works of Western music for baglama,
4.
Accompanying the works composed for
baglama and folk songs with Western instruments
(such as the piano or the guitar),
5. Playing
the baglama as an accompanying instrument
