Kur’an’da doğrudan geçen “yapmak” anlamındaki san‘a (صنعة) ve sana‘a (صنع) kökünden türeyen ifadeler, çoğunlukla Allah’ın yaratmadaki ustalığını, hikmetini ve eşsiz kudretini tanımlamak amacıyla kullanılır.

Kur’an’ın bu estetik yapısı, tarih boyunca İslam sanatını derinden etkilemiştir.

The Qur’an is not only a book that provides guidance in matters of belief, worship, and law, but also a scripture that appeals to human aesthetic perception and to the understanding of art and beauty through its profound expression. The Qur’anic terms derived from the roots san‘a (صنعة) and sana‘a (صنع), meaning “to make, to craft,” are predominantly used to describe God’s mastery, wisdom, and incomparable power in creation. In this respect, art in the Qur’an is presented not as a human capability, but as an act of God and a reflection of His supreme creative power. Associated with divine omnipotence, art is approached in relation to the order, measure, and beauty embedded in existence.

Among the principal Qur’anic concepts related to aesthetics are badī‘ (unique creativity), ihsân (to do perfectly / to act beautifully), husn and jamâl (beauty), zīna (adornment), and zukh’ruf (excessive ornamentation). Each of these terms reveals that beauty, within the Qur’anic worldview, is a manifestation of the divine, and aims to inspire humans to contemplate these beauties and cultivate moral awareness. Beauty in the Qur’an is not addressed solely as a physical quality but encompasses moral, material, and spiritual dimensions. Within this framework, ihsân expresses both a profound mode of servitude to God and an aesthetic ideal of perfection.

The aesthetic structure of the Qur’an has profoundly influenced Islamic art throughout history. In calligraphy, illumination, marbling, bookbinding, and architecture, the Qur’an’s principles of beauty and proportion have been reflected. In Islamic art, the artist does not claim to create something ex nihilo; rather, they point to the beauty already present in creation. Thus, art becomes a form of worship, contemplation, and a reflection of divine artistry manifested on earth.

This study aims to examine the core aesthetic and artistic concepts found in the Qur'an from a semantic and conceptual perspective. It will explore how these concepts are structured within the Qur'an’s understanding of art and how they are reflected in the works of Muslim artists.
