The primary objective of this article is to maintain that different definitions of politics lead to different, even contradictory understandings of democracy. In this respect, crises of representative democracy will be outlined within the framework of the interrelationships between areas such as, in particular, politics, the economy, ethics, democracy, citizenship, election and the electorate. Besides, current and probable outcomes of the perception of democracy as a means or process will be explained and some basic arguments of participatory democracy will be presented.
