How physical explanations of the origin of living beings inform moral theory has become a major topic of debate, particularly in contemporary Aristotelian scholarship. This study examines Aristotle’s theory of reproduction, as presented in Generation of Animals (Peri Zōōn Geneseōs / De Generatione Animalium), in relation to the construction of women’s moral status, and compares it with Ibn Sīnā’s interpretations in al-Shifāʾ / Kitāb al-Ḥayawān. The study argues that Aristotle’s distinction between the femaleness and the maleness is not confined to a purely biological framework but directly shapes his understanding of morality. In this context, it investigates the extent to which Ibn Sīnā adopts the Aristotelian model of reproduction and how he transforms it within his own philosophical system. In particular, the analysis focuses on how the theory of physical formation—articulated through the roles of semen and menstrual blood—affects the positioning of women with respect to virtues and vices. The central claim is that, although Ibn Sīnā partially departs from Aristotle at the level of physical explanation, he largely converges with him in the moral positioning of women. This convergence is most clearly reflected in the roles assigned to women within the family and in the virtues attributed to them. Drawing on textual analysis and comparative methodology, the study aims to demonstrate the decisive role of theories of physical formation in the construction of moral hierarchies.
