Although the golden age of development theory is said to be over, one of its controversial claims—that cultures, economic models, and political systems around the world are becoming more alike—has spurred extensive debate. The development literature, placing all states on a one-dimensional ladder of progress, claims that societies can only become affluent by following the Western route. Exponential economic growth, characterized by an abundance of material output, plus rationalization, secularization, state centralization, and democracy are considered essential for development. While liberal theory aligns with this view, Marxism differs, holding that capitalism is a necessary evil on the road to forming a communist society. But Marxism’s adherence to a Western-style development trajectory has been criticized for its Eurocentrism and Orientalism.
