Özet
This study aims to explore intergenerational differences in religious beliefs and religious identities among Muslim individuals in Türkiye using a quantitative approach, and to discuss the implications of these changes in the context of religious studies. Two studies were conducted to achieve this goal. The first involved 330 theology faculty students aged 18-52 (M=21.8; SD=3.09), with 56.7% female (N=187) and 43.3% male (N=143). In the first study, a valid and reliable Muslim Religious Beliefs Scale–MRBS was developed to identify intergenerational differences in religious belief levels. The second study included 356 participants: 139 theology faculty students and 217 of their relatives (silent generation, baby boomer, X, Y), with ages ranging from 18-91 (M=40.2; SD=15.2). The findings indicated that there are no significant differences in religious beliefs between Generation Z and Previous Generations. However, Previous Generations displayed stronger religious identity tendencies than Generation Z. Interestingly, religious belief had a more decisive influence on religious identity in Generation Z compared to Previous Generations. This study developed a suitable scale for intergenerational comparisons of religious beliefs. Furthermore, it revealed that the relationship between religious beliefs and identity is a subject that requires further analysis in intergenerational comparisons in future studies.
