Communities of practice framework explores learning as a social practice. It has been widely used in teacher education research to explain social aspects of learning to teach. The aim of this study is to describe the framework and discuss differences between its use in pre-service and in-service teacher education research. Among various key concepts of the framework, this paper focuses on the notion of legitimate peripheral participation. This study raises concerns regarding pre-service teacher preparation and gives suggestions for teacher educators.
