21.yy.da tasarımın gelişen kapsamı, sosyal yapılarda ve problemlerde konumlandırılma biçimleri, son yıllarda tüm dünyada sıklıkla gündeme gelen afetler konusunda da çözüm önerme potansiyelini görünür kılmaktadır. Afetler gibi yıkıcı sonuçlar doğuran durumlar karşısında tasarım, iyileşme ve yeniden yapılanma süreçlerinde, insan yaşamını bireysel ve sosyolojik olarak yeniden inşa etmede nesneler, hizmetler ve sistemler yoluyla etkili bir araç haline gelmiştir. Bu çalışma, afet ve tasarım kavramları arasındaki ilişkide tasarımın değer önerme potansiyeline dikkat çekmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmanın odak noktası, afetlerin ilk 72 saatinde sembolik bir ürün olarak öne çıkan battaniyeyi giyilebilir bir tasarım nesnesi olarak yeniden ele almaktır. Bu bağlamda, çok işlevli tekstil nesnesi tasarlama yöntemleri ve insan merkezli tasarım ilkeleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Çalışmada yöntem olarak, afet ve tasarım kavramlarına ilişkin akademik literatür taramasının yanında, 6 Şubat 2023 Kahramanmaraş merkezli depremlere ilişkin raporlar, uluslararası ve ulusal düzeyde afet için tasarım çözümlerinde tekstil tasarım disiplininin potansiyeli araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca, konunun tasarım eğitimine uyarlanma metodolojisi araştırılarak, çok işlevli tasarım nesnesi tasarlama yöntemleri ve aşamaları detaylandırılmıştır. Çalışmalar sonucunda, Türkiye Tasarım Vakfı ev sahipliğinde yazarın yürütücülüğünde farklı tasarım disiplinlerinden katılımcıların olduğu bir açık stüdyo çalışması yürütülerek konunun kolektif bir girişime dönüşme potansiyeli araştırılmıştır. Sonuç olarak battaniyenin giyilebilir tasarım nesnesi olarak yeniden yorumlanması, “sosyal sorumlu tasarım” ve “sosyal inovasyon” perspektifiyle uyumlu biçimde, tasarımın kriz anlarında kolektif iyileşme süreçlerinde dönüştürücü bir araç olma potansiyelini somutlaştırmıştır.
The expanding scope of design in the twenty-first century and the ways it is positioned within social structures and problems has made its potential to contribute solutions to disasters, which have increasingly come to the fore worldwide, more visible. In contexts with destructive consequences such as disasters, design has become an effective instrument in recovery and reconstruction, helping to rebuild human life at individual and societal levels through objects, services, and systems. This study aims to highlight the value proposition of design at the intersection of disaster and design. Its focal point is to reconsider the blanket prominent as a symbolic product during the first 72 hours after a disaster as a wearable design object. Accordingly, the paper foregrounds methods for designing multifunctional textile artifacts and the principles of human-centered design. Methodologically, alongside a review of academic literature on disaster and design, the study analyzes reports on the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on 6 February 2023 and examines, at both international and national levels, the potential of the textile design discipline within disaster-oriented design solutions. In addition, the methodology of adapting the subject to design education has been investigated, and the methods and stages of designing multifunctional design objects have been elaborated. As part of the work, an open studio was conducted under the auspices of the Turkey Design Foundation (Türkiye Tasarım Vakfı), led by the author and involving participants from different design disciplines, to investigate the potential for the topic to evolve into a collective initiative. In conclusion, reinterpreting the blanket as a wearable design object concretizes the potential of design aligned with the perspectives of socially responsible design and social innovation to act as a transformative tool in collective recovery processes during crises.
