Context—Naval surface platforms operate in threat environments where detectability determines survivability. The infrared (IR) signature is particularly critical, since heat-seeking munitions and infrared search-and-track (IRST) systems acquire targets from thermal emissions alone. The dominant IR source aboard a warship is the high-temperature exhaust gas discharged from the propulsion engines, together with the funnel structures heated by that gas. Eductor-diffuser devices suppress this signature passively, entraining ambient air with the momentum of the exhaust jet itself. Their performance depends strongly on geometry, yet literature has largely optimised individual geometric parameters in isolation rather than sizing a complete device under the engineering constraints of a real installation.
Objective—This study numerically investigates how three design parameters—eductor cross-sectional geometry, the stand-off distance, and the number of diffuser funnels—affect the thermo-fluid performance of a device designed for a generic 600 kW marine main-propulsion diesel engine, subject to the maximum exhaust back pressure permitted by the engine manufacturer and to the space envelope of the funnel compartment.
Method—Computational Fluid Dynamics analyses were performed in ANSYS Fluent. The conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy were discretized over control volumes using the finite volume method, with turbulence closed by the standard k-ε model. The model was validated against the experimental measurements published by Chen; the standard k-ε and k-ω models were compared and k-ε was retained. Mesh and iteration independence were established, and 14 geometric configurations (2 eductor geometries, 9 stand-off distances, 3 funnel counts) were analyzed.
Results—The clover-type eductor distributes exhaust momentum from the centreline towards the diffuser walls, raising the entrained air mass flow rate from 1.96 to 2.12 kg/s and lowering the mass-weighted mean outlet temperature from 519.4 K to 507.7 K. Increasing the stand-off ratio from 0.23 to 1.00 reduces the outlet temperature by 32.8 K, making it the most influential parameter; the compartment height constraint, however, limits the usable ratio to 0.70. Increasing the funnel count beyond four yields a negligible gain (0.06 K). The optimized device reduces the exhaust gas temperature from 690.15 K to 494.9 K while keeping the eductor back pressure below the 2000 Pa limit.
Conclusion—Within the constraint set of a real installation, the stand-off distance is the dominant design parameter, the eductor cross-section offers a secondary but non-negligible gain, and the funnel count saturates at four. The validated CFD methodology and the constraint-driven design workflow provide a practical basis for sizing passive IR suppression devices for naval vessels.
