Transhumanizm, Society 5.0, Mars’a yolculuk gibi yeni
Retrofuturism and retro gaming trends developing in digital
games provide fruitful examples to anaylze the relationship between technology,
society and culture. Although the game industry strongly depends on new
hardware and software with higher technology and uses popular topics in game
narrative, it is also possible to come across different examples, especially in
the field of indy games. Retro-futurist narratives and gameplay (Aarseth, 2003)
of retro-games offer the opportunity to examine the relationship between
society and technology.
Retrofuturism is based on the visions of the future in the works
of the past. It is performed in various branches of media, especially in cinema
and computer games. For the audience of today, this combination of the past and
the future which is not materialized, carries contradictory or conflicting
aspects. On one hand, it can lead to nostalgia (Sharp, 2011), on the other it
can harbor the criticism of technology, modernity, consumer society and
capitalism, as in various examples of science fiction (Davidson, 2019). Fallout
game series are well known examples of retrofuturism. Newer titles such as
Encased (2019) and Atom RPG (2017) are showing that this trend is still active.
Retro gaming is an archiving and playing activity that is
interested in old computer games. It is also used for new games and players who
prefer the gameplay and graphics of the old times. The interest to old designs is
not solely nostalgic. Within the framework of the place of the games in
culture, gameplay is the core element that is carried, shared, changed or
protected from traditional games to today's games. Retro gaming has the
potential to present a critical view of technology by turning to these forms of
the past and the new iterations of these forms (Heineman, 2014).
Retro futurism and retro gaming can be positioned as
critical oppositions to the technological progress discourse, which is also at
the center of new technoutopian and futuristic approaches, such as
transhumanism, Society 5.0, new space race for the moon and Mars.
