In apparel retailing, store design is one of the important factors influencing consumers’ perception of the store atmosphere, their interaction with products, the time they spend in the store, and their purchasing behavior. In apparel stores, not only the way products are presented but also design elements such as the physical environment of the store, customer circulation, fitting rooms, lighting, color use, flooring, ceiling, wall covering, checkout location, and the technology used directly affect the consumer experience.
This study aims to compare the European menswear store coded as X and the Turkish menswear store coded as Y in terms of store design criteria in apparel stores. Since permission was not obtained from the selected stores, the brand names were coded as X and Y throughout the study. Within the scope of the research, students from the Department of Textile Engineering at Marmara University were taught the subjects of store design and store atmosphere as part of the Retailing and Store Management course. After acquiring the relevant theoretical knowledge, the students visited X and Y stores and evaluated both stores using 15 store design criteria on a scale from 1 to 10. Based on these evaluations, total and average scores for each criterion were calculated.
According to the data set, the overall average score of the X store was determined as 7.16, while the overall average score of the Y store was 7.31. Y achieved a higher average score in 10 of the 15 criteria, while X was rated higher in 3 criteria, and both stores received equal average scores in 2 criteria. Y particularly stood out in terms of wall covering, color suitability, fixtures, ceiling, lighting, fitting rooms, use of dead spaces, and cleanliness. X, on the other hand, received higher scores in flooring, corridor width, and the compatibility of price presentation with store design. As a result, it was observed that the overall store design performance of Y was slightly higher, while X had strong aspects in specific design areas such as customer circulation, flooring arrangement, and price presentation.
