Sonuç: Artan bilinç seviyesiyle can ve

Objectives:
Due to the active North
Anatolian Fault Line, an earthquake is expected to cause many loss of life and
property in Istanbul (1-2). It is a sad fact that unconsciousness is the
building block of these losses. The most important step that can be taken to
minimize losses and prevent the earthquake from turning into a disaster is
awareness-raising activities (3-4). For this reason, it is aimed to evaluate
the earthquake awareness level of higher education students studying in
Istanbul and to contribute to the necessary preparations against the expected
big Istanbul earthquake.
Methods:
A survey consisting of 22 questions was presented to higher education
students online (Google Forms) between 08.04.2021-02.05.2021. Survey data (n =
215) received after avoiding duplicate responses were evaluated with IBM SPSS
21.0 statistics program. This research was approved by Marmara University
Faculty of Medicine Clinical Research Ethics Committee with the protocol number
09.2021.514, dated 07.04.2021.
Results: Of the 215 people
participating in the survey 69% (n=148) are women. The general age range of the
participants is 18-20 (n = 130), 43% of them are associate degree students and
47.44% of them are undergraduate students. 76% of the participants (n = 163)
had experienced an earthquake before. 88.4% of the participants stated that
they do not feel ready for a possible earthquake. Among these people, the rate
of those who do not prepare their earthquake bags is 75.3%. Those who think
that the measures taken against the earthquake will reduce the damage caused by
the earthquake constitute a large group of 86% (n = 185). Although 58.6% of the
participants thought that the building they resided in was not earthquake
resistant, only 11.11% of these people had their buildings checked. 74% of the
participants think that the buildings constructed within the scope of urban
transformation in Istanbul are not suitable for urban transformation. In
addition, 42.32% indicate that there is no assembly area or it is used out of
purpose.
Conclusions: Although it is realized by the
majority of the participants that the loss of life and property will decrease
with the increasing level of consciousness, it is seen that the necessary
precautions are not taken and there is not enough preparedness for the
earthquake.
