Ultraviolet
Radiation (UVR) harms the human health and the incidence of skin cancer is
widely spreading all over the world. Therefore, there is a high demand for the
textiles with UV protection property. The demand is not only for “garments” or
“shirts”, but also for the awnings, the tents and the curtains for the
protection against the UV radiation coming from the sun. In the first part of
this research, the samples of 100% PES knitted fabric were dyed with Dianix
Yellow S-4G, Dianix Red 2BSL- FS 150 (C.I. Disperse Red 184) and Dianix Blue
GSL 400 (C.I. Disperse Blue 165) at 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 3% o.w.f
concentrations in the presence of one of the UV absorbers, namely 2% o.w.f. Fadex
ECS (Clariant) and 2% o.w.f. Cibafast P (Ciba). The effects of the treatment
with the UV absorbers on the colouristic properties were investigated. Ultraviolet
Protection Factor (UPF) values of the fabrics were calculated in accordance
with the AS/NZS 4399:1996 standard, using the transmission values of the
fabrics from 290 nm to 400 nm wavelength range. In the second part, 100% PES
voile and satin weave fabrics were dyed with 1% o.w.f. Dianix Yellow S-4G, 1%
0.w.f. Dianix Red 2BSL- FS 150 (C.I. Disperse Red 184) and 1% o.w.f. Dianix
Blue GSL 400 (C.I. Disperse Blue 165) in the presence of the UV absorbers. The
transmission values of the dyed and treated fabrics in the 290-770 nm wavelength
range were recorded and the “shade factors” and the % UVR blocking were
calculated in accordance with the AS 4174-1994 standard. Washing fastness tests
were carried out with the treated fabrics in accordance with the ISO
105-C06:1987 standard in order to investigate the effect of UV protection finishing
on the fastness properties.
The UV absorber treated 100% PES knitted fabrics had
“excellent” UVR protection category in accordance with the AS/NZS 4399:1996
standard and they had very low % UVA and % UVB
transmission values. The 100% PES woven fabrics had % blocking values between 50-99%
in respect to the applied UV absorber’s type and the applied concentrations.
