Abstract

In order to determine the genetic counselling problems of the Turkish patients living in Germany, a survey (questionnaire) was carried out in cooperation with German consultants. The aim was to investigate the problems of the patients with this point of view and put forward the possibilities of professional help. The principal problems were cited as communication problems due to the difference in culture and language as well as insufficient information. The proposals were to give a preliminary information to the applicants, to find a regular interpreter, to submit a written interpretation of the consultancy report, to print out informative pamphlets in Turkish and to get in touch with the doctors who have sent them. The needs to provide educative seminars for both sides and to employ Turkish consultants were stressed.
