Özet

The analyses of Turkish modernization form a meta-theoretical forum where different disciplines come together. These different analyses have a normative dimension that construes the frames of macro-descriptions of different disciplines in social science. The rise in the theories of modernization was closely linked to constructing the comparative and universal social science. A Euro-American centric and progressive narrative has spread to all over the world. It has replaced the vocabulary of Westernization in social sciences in the anti-colonial non-Western world. The rise of post-modern critiques, and the criticisms of orientalism brought decentralization to the theories of modernization. Afterwards, the narratives of modernization were revised by interdisciplinary and non Euro-centric theories, and alternatives such as 'multiple modernities' and 'local modernities' have emerged. The rise of analyses problematizing the boundaries of disciplines also coincide with this process. In this article the contradictory and dialectical history of the discourse of Turkish Modernization is problematized within the sociology of disciplines. The epistemological dimension of democratization theories that social sciences embrace normatively which functionalize the social orders for the sake of relativization and historicization is discussed.
