Özet

Throughout our lives, we are faced with many stressful and traumatic life events. Being able to cope effectively with these adverse life events helps both to protect our mental health and to contribute to our personal development from the experiences we gain from these life events. At this point, school-based crisis preparedness and intervention programs are considered important for children and youth to acquire these skills at an early stage. One of the models that underpin these intervention programs is the BASICPh model. The BASIC-Ph model, developed by Mooli Lahad (1992), an Israeli educational psychologist, is used as an intervention approach that will enable individuals to effectively cope with trauma by identifying and supporting their coping modes/channels, and to prevent further increase in post-traumatic stress. This model also aims to raise awareness about the coping channels used by the individual and thus to help her/his protect herself/himself by increasing the level of psychological resilience. The more coping channels a person can use, the faster they can recover. Therefore, it is emphasized that while planning intervention programs for children and young people, it is beneficial to include activities that activate every coping channels as much as possible. In this chapter of the book, the BASIC-Ph model is first introduced. Then, explanations on the use of the model in school-based preventive and protective crisis preparedness and intervention programs and psycho-social support practices for children and youth are given.
