This study discusses the concept of collocation, which requires relatively more attention in vocabulary teaching, and its place and importance in the literature review. It has been observed that foreign language learners have difficulty using these structures in context because some collocations are ‘irregular’. Choosing appropriate words according to the context in which they are used is particularly important in foreign language teaching. The importance of collocations is particularly evident in oral communication. In our study, a selected passage from Sait Faik Abasıyanık’s story “The Useless Man” was given to 25 pre-service teachers of French in their 3rd and 4th year at the Atatürk Faculty of Education at Marmara University, Department of French Language Teaching and we asked them to make an oral translation from Turkish into French. Based on the data obtained, the following questions were asked: How do students interpret collocations? Do the translated collocations have the same meaning and effect in the target language?
