This study set off to explore prospective biology teachers’ acceptance of the theory of evolution, their
attitudes towards teaching of it and, the relationship between their acceptance levels of the theory and
their attitudes towards teaching of it. The sample of the study was 579 prospective biology teachers. The
data were collected through the Measure of Acceptance Evolutionary Theory and the Evolution Teaching
Attitude Scale. Results revealed that the majority of the participants did not accepted the theory of
evolution (218; 37,7%) or were undecisive about its scientific status (302, 52,2%). The results showed
that the participant prospective teachers’ acceptance levels were especially low regarding the
evolutionary mechanisms, scientific status of the theory of evolution and status of the theory in scientific
community. About half of the participants’ (276; 50,6%) attitudes towards teaching of the theory of
evolution were at the medium level whereas only few participants (66; 12%) presented high attitudes. A
medium level of relationship was found between acceptance levels and attitudes towards teaching the
theory of evolution.
