In this study the main aim was to examine prospective teachers’ attitudes towards the teaching profession
in terms of different variables. Designed on a survey research model, the data were collected with attitudes
toward teaching profession scale. The study group consisted 113 students from different teaching
departments of Marmara University Faculty of Education. Regarding students’ department and choice order
for university entrance exam, the data were analysed statistically using ANOVA, Pearson moment
correlation and post-hoc tests. Pre-service teachers have positive attitudes towards teaching profession and
attitude scores differ significantly according to some departments. It was also found that the pre-service
teachers' attitudes towards the teaching profession and the reasons for choosing the teaching profession
differed according to the order of preference of the departments. The findings of the research imply the
suggestions that incentives may be given to the students who will prefer the teaching profession in the
university entrance exam, and studies should be done to improve the attitudes of prospective teachers in
teaching departments.
