Palliative care is a multidisciplinary approach that reduces the problems of patients with
pain, physical ailments, oral intake disorder, immobility in the last phase of the disease or in
diseases that progress rapidly and cannot be treated medically, and which has applications to
adapt to the processes with the patient and his family, who have been living for years.
According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, approximately 100 million people
need palliative care every year. Since nutritional activity is mostly impaired in patients
hospitalized in palliative care units, patients are faced with problems such as malnutrition and
malnutrition. Nutrition is one of the most important and basic requirements for the maintenance
of vital functions. Malnutrition is important in clinical treatment and follow-up, as it will cause
delay and deterioration in wound healing, suppression of the immune system, regression in
cognitive functions and general decrease in functional capacities. Nutritional support is
provided in order to prevent malnutrition in patients with a functional gastrointestinal system
(GIS) who cannot receive adequate and balanced nutrition. nutritional support; It is an important
treatment option that improves the quality of life and reduces complications and mortality rates
in patients with malnutrition and impaired nutrition. Enteral route (oral or tube feeding) or
parenteral route (central or peripheral nutrition) are used to prevent and treat malnutrition.
Enteral nutrition can be done by reaching different parts of the gastrointestinal tract from the
mouth to the jejunum. In enteral tube feeding, a feeding tube can be inserted through the nose
(naso-gastric, naso-jejunal) or a stoma opened endoscopically into the stomach or jejunum
[percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), jejunal extension PEG, percutaneous endoscopic
jejunostomy].
Nutrition with PEG is one of the important care services, especially in palliative care
units. In addition to the effective evaluation of all life activities in patients hospitalized in
palliative care units, detailed evaluation of nutritional activity is necessary and important. The
care management of patients hospitalized in palliative care units and fed with PEG should be
maintained with a multidisciplinary approach and a holistic approach, and care should be organized according to patient-specific care needs. In this literature review, the care
management of patients with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in the palliative care unit is
discussed.
