Surface Electromyography (SEMG) is increasingly used to monitor muscle fatigue,

which is a basic physical evaluation parameter of sport performance. In this study, we

aimed to determine whether the Mean Frequency (MNF), Median Frequency (MDF)

and Root Mean Square (RMS) of the SEMG signal frequency spectrum are suited to

evaluate muscle endurance and fatigue in elite wrestlers, and whether elite wrestlers

have different fatigue profiles compared with sedentary people.

This study was conducted on 19 elite wrestlers and 19 sedentary men. The semg was

recorded from the m. biceps brachii of the dominant hand at 90o flexion of the elbow

joint. The subjects' sustained isometric contractions at 50% and 75Yo of Maximal

Voluntary Contraction (MVC) till fatigue ensued. No difference between the groups was

recorded for endurance time. In both groups, signal amplitude increased and the spectral

parameters shifted to lower frequencies. No significant differences were found for the

spectral parameters MNF and MDF between both groups (p0.05). Only for 50% of

MVC the increase of RMS was significantly higher in wrestlers (p<0.05). This finding

may be the result of training induced muscle adaptations for wrestlers. As a result,

SEMG may provide valuable information in order to evaluate fatigue during sustained

isometric contractions and assist training periodization.
