Özet

Following the establishment of canonical hadith collections, hadith commentaries emerged as one of the most significant genres of hadith literature. Despite their importance, commentaries have not received much scholarly attention until very recently. In this chapter, I offer a conceptual and structural framework for the study of hadith commentaries with a special emphasis on their historical development. Additionally, I offer preliminary remarks about other equally important but less addressed issues, including the function, authorship, and the patronage of these works. I demonstrate that commentaries serve many functions on different levels, such as affirming the author's position in intellectual circles, and advocating legal or theological doctrines. I also argue that the formation process of a hadith commentary is much more complicated than initially assumed, encompassing a diverse group of actors, from an author's pupils and scholarly rivals to political authorities and patrons. I finish the chapter with a projection for the future of hadith commentaries, and point to prospective fields of research.
