Özet

The aim of this study is to indicate the role of translation in identity formation via translated children’s literature. According to the contemporary pedagogical approach, children’s stories and fairy tales contribute to the perception of the world, nature and human beings in children. They also affect the way children think as well as their psychological development. In Turkish literary system, children read many translated stories and fairy tales rather than originally written Turkish books. Therefore, it can be said that the effect of translated children’s books is also important in Turkish case. In other words, it is inevitable for translated children’s literature to affect children’s pedagogical world in different aspects in Turkey. In line with this view, our study will focus on the Turkish translations of Belgian children’s book series titled Martine by two Turkish publishing houses. Within this context, how these stories have affected Turkish literary system will be examined by considering their sociocultural and pedagogical reflections. Moreover, the role of these translated children’s series in shaping and determining the role of female children as future adults in Turkish culture as well as the reception of the series by Turkish audience will be discussed. The main focus of the study will be on the characteristics of female role presented and tried to be imposed on Turkish culture by means of Martine translations. For this purpose, sociocultural contexts of the periods when translations were published will be described in terms of female image, and whether these stories in question have social contributions in identity formation of young women will be discussed. Theoretical framework of the study will be shaped in line with the translation definition of Translation Studies theorist Gideon Toury, who mentions that translation is a means of “cultural planning” (1999).
