Özet

Abstract

Introduction: Smoking is very common both in our country and in the world. Today, people of different ages and characteristics are smoking.

Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the level of smoking dependence and its effect on the quality of life in physically disabled athletes.

Methods: Demographic information and smoking status of participants were recorded. Smoking dependence level of smokers was assessed by The Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence and the quality of life was assessed by the Short Form 36 (SF-36). Data was analysed using the statistical package SPSS version 11.5.

Results: Twenty six volunteer licensed athletes (24 males, 2 females; mean age 24 ± 7.48 years) participated in the study. When smoking status was assessed, 57.7% of the participants were cigarette smokers. The 62.5% of male participants were smokers while no female participants were smokers. According to Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence, 26.7% of smokers had low, 19.2% moderate, and 11.5% high dependence on nicotine. There was no statistical correlation between smoking status and quality of life (p<0,05).

Conclusions: The rate of cigarette use was found to be high in physically disabled athletes. The level of dependence of smoking athletes varied. This result may be due to number of participants. Although there is no correlation between smoking and quality of life, new studies should be planned by increasing the number of physically disabled athletes especially females.
