Acem’in İbnü’l-Arabî’yi yorumlama biçimi literatürde dikkat çekildiği üzere
Bununla birlikte
o, Meşâhid’in girişinde eserde yer alan bazı unsurları netleştirecek notlar ve
Sitti Acem eserdeki
müşahedelere ilişkin kişisel tecrübelerini öne çıkaran bir yöntemle kaleme
aldığı şerhine İbnü’l-Arabî’yi bir peygamber topluluğuyla birlikte gördüğü bir
rüyada aldığı emirle başlamış, yaptığı işi velayet ve verâset sorumluluğunun
bir gereği olarak temellendirmiştir. Sitti Acem’in şerhinde İbnü’l-Arabî’ye
gösterdiği hürmet ve bağlılığın yanı sıra bazı görüşleri ve bunları ifade ediş
biçimi sonraki dönem İbnü’l-Arabî şârihlerinde görülmediği için dikkat
çekmiştir. Şerhte kendi görüşlerini öne çıkarmış, bazı kavramları kendine özel
anlamlarla kullanmış ve yeni kavramlar üretmiştir. Meşâhid’i şerh etme
Sitti Acem’in varlık (vücûd) kavramını
The works
of the Andalusian Sufi Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240) have received commentary
from countless authors, from their publication until today. The decisive role
in this literature is played by Ibn alʿArabī’s disciple Sadraddīn Qunawī (d.
673/1274) and his followers. However, before the development of the literature
of the Akbarī commentary tradition, represented by Qūnawī and his followers,
and after it, commenters on Ibn al-ʿArabī perceived his work and explained it
differently from that tradition. In this paper, we evaluate two precedent
attempts: the interpretations of Ibn Sawdakīn (d. 646/1248) and Sitt al-ʿAjam
(alive in 689/1290), who both wrote commentaries on Ibn ʿArabī’s Mashāhid
al-asrār.
Mashāhid
al-asrār is a work written in a kind of varidat form that deals with the
encounters and dialogues between God and the witness (shāhid) who is in the
center of the work. The book consists of a letter that was written to the
Tunisian Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Mahdawī which was later turned into the
prologue of the work, fourteen sections related to the fourteen contemplations
of the witness and an epilogue. The basic forms of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s concepts
such as sainthood (walāyah), prophethood (nubuwwah), inheritance (wirāthah),
khatmiyyah and perfect man can be observed in Mashāhid, which is accepted as
the first work of Ibn al-ʿArabī. The work has been subject to commentaries
since it incorporates events that are not encountered in daily life, some expressions
that push the limits of the language of religion, and its symbolic language. In
this article, the commentaries of Ibn Sevdekīn and Sitt al-ʿAjam have been
examined through their approaches and methods, not their content. Both
emphasized their commentator identity as well as the deep respect and interest
they presented to Ibn al-ʿArabī. In addition to the common themes such as
competence, inheritance, divine bestow and spiritual connection with the
author, which are mentioned in their commentaries, the critical tone of Sitt
al-ʿAjam’s commentary, which is obtrusive and has been noted by scholars, marks
a difference.
The
commentary of Ibn Sevdekīn, who is a close student of Ibn al-ʿArabī, the
scribal and commentator of his works, mostly conveys Ibn ʿArabī’s explanations
about the work. However, he has recorded in the prologue that he made some
explanations to clarify some elements in Mashāhid and put additional
information that will enable to comprehend the text. Furthermore, he would need
to justify this attempt on the purpose of making the best of his responsibility
related to inheritance (wirāthah). On the other hand, by mentioning the
difficulty of annotating the work, he has emphasized the necessity of
assimilating the states of the author in order to overcome these difficulties,
and therefore he proved his contribution to the commentary.
Sitt
al-ʿAjam has started her commentary with the order she received in a dream
about a group of prophets and Ibn al-ʿArabī. Therefore, she has grounded her
work as a requirement of the responsibility of sainthood (walāyah) and
inheritance (wirāthah). Her commentary bases on her personal experiences about
the contemplations of the book which she put into word through her unique style
and vocabulary. In her commentary, besides the respect and devotion she showed
to Ibn al-ʿArabī, certain expressions of her drew attention as they were not
seen in the commentaries of Ibn al-ʿArabī in the later period: She expresses
her preciseness about her comments on Mashāhid, emphasizes her own opinions,
uses concepts with specific meanings, has self confidence in creating new
concepts, states that she had reached the revelations mentioned in the book and
experienced them as well as the author did, underlines her unique position
among the men of God of her era, believes in God’s blessing on her, and within
this context holds no fear against the criticisms which will arise. Among the
issues that seem she has dissented from Ibn al-ʿArabī, her interpretation of
existence (wujūd) stands out. The examples in which Sitt al-ʿAjam uses the
concept of existence (wujūd) prove that she does not use existence as an
inclusive concept that encompasses all the being. According to her, the one
which no determination about is in question, cannot be talked about and no
judgment can be made about is not the existence (wujūd), but the essence (dhāt)
is. Although her interpretation on the concept of existence seems different
from the perceptive of existence especially seen in the Fusūs al-hikam
commentaries, it has a content that intersects with the expressions of Ibn
al-ʿArabī at some basic points. Therefore, it will be significant to assert
that she does not dissent from Ibn al-ʿArabī but interprets him differently.
Finally,
the original understanding of another pair of commentators on Ibn al-ʿArabī
should be briefly noted. These were Tilimsānī (d. 690/1291) and Jīlī (d.
832/1428). Tilimsānī, probably the first commentator on Fusūs al-hikam, was a
student of Ibn al-ʿArabī and Qunawī but his belonging to the Akbarī commentary
tradition was questioned. In his interpretation on Ibn al-ʿArabī a unique,
self-confident, and independent but respectful attitude is observed. Although
he dissents from Ibn al-ʿArabī on some issues such as absolute existence (al-
wujūd al-mutlaq) and aʿyan as-sābite, he avoided expressing them briefly. Jīlī
has not been fully incorporated into the tradition although he produced works
well after the development of the dominant approach to Akbarī commentary and
became prominent by being criticized by those in the mainstream. However, he
also clearly expressed his respect and loyalty to Ibn al-ʿArabī and agreed on
this issue with the other three commentators. Especially, related to the Fusūs
commentaries, it is observed that the commentators refrain themselves to
intervene between the text and the reader and rarely put forward their own
thoughts concerning this respect for Ibn al-ʿArabī. In addition to this
reservation, the respect and devotion they have to the author has revealed some
conservative attitudes, but this kind of attitude and interpretation is not
seen in the first Fusūs commentators. The early commentators mentioned in this
article stand out as prominent examples of this situation. On the other hand,
the fact that this attitude did not continue and only a partial example of it
was seen in Jīlī in the later periods and that this became the subject of
criticism in the tradition shows that this form of interpretation requires
deeper research.
