Özet

Sports interpreting is a term that refers to the consecutive interpreting tasks performed by an interpreter working for a sports team and/or for a player at sporting events. This type of interpreting can be done either as a temporary freelancing or ad hoc task (i.e. at tournaments) or as a permanent staff member of a team.

The current study is part of an ongoing graduate thesis titled “Defining the Status and the Contexts of Sports Interpreting as a Type of Consecutive Interpreting” and aims at defining the role of the sports interpreter as well as the tasks and requirements of sports interpreting. The focus of this paper will be the international sporting events that took place in Turkey in the last three years. The theoretical framework of the presentation will derive from the functional approaches in Translation Studies.

According to Christiane Nord (1997; 106), "the relationship between the client and the interpreter is not as straightforward in interpreting as it is in written translation." This is also true for sports interpreting due to its different challenges. In the proposed presentation, I will be presenting examples from the open-ended interviews conducted with the practicing sports interpreters in Turkey. The analysis and questioning of the position of the sports interpreter with specific cases and his/her job descriptions with respect to the various settings that she/he performs in are believed to provide insights into the current situation of the profession and thus help draw a framework of the profession as a field of consecutive interpreting.
