Abstract

 

 

Objectives:

Teachers are one of the confidential person in the community who work at an environment very close to children. Teachers who sexually abuse students, cause negative impact at perception of children safety in the community. Survey studies represented that %38 of students being sexually harassed by teachers or school employees. Also in studies, the school established %44 of abuse sites and teachers represented the largest occupational group of sexual abusers(%29). The main purpose of this presentation is to represent demografic profile of teacher offenders and their student victims so that governor set out awereness programs to keep children safe at the school.

 

Methods:

This study has consisted of a retrospective case reports that evaluate clinical and juridicial files of nine children who were abused by their teacher. The cases were raised from 295 sexual abuse cases whose assessment had been concluded between 2012 and 2013 at the Child Protection Center of Marmara University.

 

Results:

There were six offenders and nine victims. All offenders were male and all victims were female. Victims’s age were between 6 and 17. Eight of nine cases’s crime scenes were at school. One case’s crime scene was out of school. Most of the offending types were kissing, fondling of genital area and touching of breast. Anxiety disorder in five victims, post traumatic stress disorder in three victims and acute stress disorder in one victim was diagnosed according with DSM-IV criteria.

 

Conclusion

Sexually abused student by teacher is not uncommon. This study helps to raise public awareness about children safety . To keep the children safe in school, more in depth studies on this subject are needed.
