Özet

States are not only power-seekers in international politics, but they also pursue higher status within informal groupings. Most of the existing studies on status-seeking politics extensively focus on states taken individually while neglecting the role of international organizations, especially Informal International Governmental Organizations (IIGOs), in the construction and consolidation of member states’ global status. This paper will investigate the following question: how does BRICS, as an informal organization, contribute to its members’ global status politics and status-relevant role performance? Additionally, it will come up with an innovative theoretical framework, called the Global Status Politics Framework (GSPF), partly inspired by Holsti’s role theory. The GSPF is based on three layers: status conception, status expectations and status performance (or enactment). We plan to conduct a separate assessment for the global status of the five BRICS states in the two issue areas of global governance, namely international economy and trade and international cooperation.
