Measurement of body composition is an important concern to achieve aesthetics perfection and assessing
nutritional status in dancers. The use of skinfold and body composition analyses have been widely used as
an alternative way for the direct assessment of body composition. Several prediction equations produced
from different population to measure body composition.1,2,3,4 However, these formulas have not been
established for clear eligibility of modern dancers. Concurrently, subject of body composition studies
have been predominantly professional ballet dancers or ballet students5. There were a few studies
performed on modern dancers. Therefore, the aim of this study was firstly to determine the characteristics
of body composition of the modern dancers using body composition analyser and compare the equations
existed in the literature from different subjects, according to their gender, and secondly, to assert the
necessity to develop a new formula for modern dancers. Twenty-seven female and seventeen male all of
them modern dance university students (mean age=22.9±3.3 years), volunteered to participate in the
study. Body composition (fat mass, fat free mass, percent body fat) was assessed using body composition
analyser (Tanita BC-418). Body fat percentage or body density were also calculated from the mean of
three readings per site according to the different sites skinfold (triceps, biceps, subscapular, suprailiac,
abdominal, mid-thigh, medial calf) values using the previously equations developed by different
population.1,2,3,4 The Siri equation was also used to assess %BF of dancers.5One-way analyses of variance
(Anova) followed by Tukey’s test were used to compare all test results with each other. A significance
level of p < 0.05 was selected. Some of body composition values obtained from the existing equations’
were significant differences then the values of body composition analyser for each gender (p≤ 0.05). In
conclusion, the previously validated equations formed in order to estimate body composition from to
skinfold measurements of different population are not suitable for modern dancer. The result of the
present study support that the development of dance population specific equations is necessary for female
and male modern dancers to estimate the body composition.
