Perception,
beliefs, and behaviour affecting early diagnosis of breast cancer in Turkey
Abstract
Turkey is a country that unites the continents of Asia and Europe, with an area of 783,562 km² and a population of 85 million 279 thousand 553 people.
The National Cancer
Control Program in Turkey was initiated in 2008. In this program, it is aimed
that 70% of women aged 40-69 years will have their mammograms performed once
every 2 years and population-based breast cancer screening will be performed.
Although screening tests have been carried out free of charge in the Cancer
Screening and Early Diagnosis Centres (KETEM)of the Ministry of Health (MoH) since
2008, this screening target has not been achieved in Turkey.
The “Participatory Action Research on Early Diagnosis of
Breast Cancer” study is planned to identify the obstacles in front of the National Breast Cancer Screening Program in
detail, in different aspects.
For
the study, permission for research will be obtained from the local ethics
committee (Marmara University School of Medicine). Also, permission for
research will be obtained from the Turkish Ministry of Health, General
Directorate of Public Health, Cancer Branch. Lately, all participants participating in the study will be informed and their permissions will be
obtained.
This
study will be implemented by a team including professor doctors and assistant
doctors from the Marmara University, technical consultants from the Ministry of
Health, the Marmara University and Sustainability Research and Consulting Group
Coordinator, The Turkish Science & Technology Research Council in Turkey.
The
average time for the implementation of the study is planned as a total of ten
months (from March 2023 until the end of the year 2023).
The data will be analyzed for Turkey as a whole,
for urban and rural areas, and the five demographic regions of the country
(West, South, Central, North, and East).
This
study will be a type of study; the first part will include analyzing the two data sets collected by the Ministry of Health for 2018. The
second part will be a qualitative type of study. For a value-based approach, data will be
collected using interviews, focus group discussions, action research, and pathways to the diagnosis
of breast cancer.
The
qualitative data will be collected from four different groups: i. Women never participated in screening, ii.
Women ever participated in screening, iii. Family physicians and family health
personnel, and iv. KETEM’s health workers.
