Abstract:
Information about the effects of music on people goes back thousands of years. In this study, the effects
of maqams on people were examined using today's technologies. 11 healthy right-handed participants
(6 females, 5 males) listened to Quran recordings in saba, uşşak, rast, segah and hicaz makams and their
effects on the prefrontal cortex, the cortex related to emotions, were monitored by fNIRS. As a result of
the study, a significant difference was observed between the makams and the resting situations. There
were significant differences at different levels between the resting status and the other makams, except
for the Hicaz makam. This shows us that the Qur'an recited in different maqams causes different effects
on people. If the Qur'an is recited with the appropriate maqams, its effects on the listeners will increase.
